The Aboriginal people had lived in Australia for thousands of years prior to the arrival of the white settlers. Captain Cook sailed to North Queensland in 1770 but the ship, HM Bark Endeavour, ran aground on the coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef. The crew managed to find a river mouth, later called Endeavour River, and a small town began to grown around this river.
