Paphos became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1980 and is rich in cultural sights and historic buildings. The modern beach resort compliments the ancient charm of the town where so many historical events have taken place. Medieval Castle an impressive fortress was built by the Byzantines to protect the harbour and the town itself. It was later restored in the 13th century but completely destroyed by the Venetians in 1570. When the Turks governed the island, they rebuilt the castle which provided an intimidating barrier to invaders. It has since become one of the most important symbols of Paphos as well as hosting many annual events.
