Brighton’s prominence as a premier seaside resort continued to rise during the 20th century, although it did experience some decline with the closing of the West Pier in 1975, and its partial collapse in December 2002, when a severe storm hit the coastal area. With the pier’s restoration and the city’s ambitious urban development programmes, Brighton now offers up a contrast of its Georgian charm with brilliant new architecture.
