In 1550, Helsinki was built at the mouth of the Vantaa River, as commanded by the King of Sweden, Gustavus Wasa. Not long afterwards, he ordered the burghers of Porvoo, Rauma, Tammisaari and Ulvila to move to this new site, thus creating one of the first waves of expansion. The town was designed to compete with Tallinn, in Estonia, on the opposite shore, for Russian trade.
