After the Greek War of Independence (1821 to 1831), only 5,000 people lived in the city. The city’s situation reached crisis point and over the next few decades and desperate attempts were made to rebuild the city into a modern and prosperous place. At the end of the 19th century, Athens became the first city to host the newly revived Olympic Games.
