Following the collapse of the Roman Empire, the area known today as Hungary saw a power vacuum. This was largely filled by invaders such as the Huns as they swept into Europe in the 4th and 5th centuries. The name Hungary does not, however, come from the Hun invasion and is instead thought to derive from the Onogurs, a group of horse-riding nomads who came to the country in the 7th century.
