English is the main language of the Republic of Ireland, although the old Celtic language of Gaelic is constitutionally recognised as the country’s first official language. Gaelic is spoken by less a little over 25 per cent of the population (who speak English also) but is not in common use and visitors are unlikely to be met with it in circumstances other than seeing it written occasionally outside public houses and restaurants.
