Beginning in the 8th century and continuing until 1917, Jaffa was ruled by Arabs, with the exception of a short period when invading Crusaders took power. By 1840, Jewish settlers began returning to Jaffa and by the end of the 19th century, owing to the birth of Zionism and the pogroms of Eastern Europe, waves of Jewish immigrants arrived.
