Among the highlights are the magnificent medieval Nijo Castle, the Golden Pavilion (Kinkakuji), the Buddhist art treasures the Sanjusangendo Temple, and the minimalist Zen rock garden of Ryoanji. There are also a number of old historical buildings that were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
