One of the major health risks for travellers to the country is bilharzia, caused by a parasitic worm that is found in some freshwater sources in eastern parts of South Africa. Another risk is malaria, generally most prevalent in the north-eastern region: travellers should seek medical help if they experience flu-like symptoms while visiting the area.
