They immediately banned the Korean language, changed Korean names to Japanese ones, forced farmers to give up farmlands and almost drove the people of Korea to destruction. This abuse of power came to an end when Korea was liberated from the Japanese, but this liberation also had consequences. North and south became divided in and saw South Korea holding their first elections and establishing a Korean Government in 1948.
