Buddha’s Birthday, intricate, solemn rituals are held at numerous Buddhist temples across South Korea and lanterns are hung in the temple squares. The lanterns are lit and carried in parades in the evening by hundreds of monks. Liberation Day remembers the Japanese favourable reception of the Allies’ conditions of surrender and the resulting freedom of Korea in 1945.
