If Kandy is the capital of the hill country, then Nuwara Eliya is its most traditional centre. Located at 2,000m, the town soars above valleys filled with tea plantations, forests and waterfalls. The town itself is a throwback to colonial times, when it was a popular retreat for the Dutch and British, who built homes here to escape the heat and humidity of the lower country.
