Syria is an attractive blend of ancient history and modern cities, situated along the Mediterranean Sea. The capital city of Damascus is nourished by the Ghouta Oasis and the Barada River, with exotic bazaars and modern hotels and restaurants filling the streets. The city was first settled around 5000 BC, making it the region’s oldest city that has been continuously inhabited. One of Syria’s finest attractions is the Krak des Chevaliers castle, whose appearance has been admirably maintained since it was first built 800 years ago. Many travellers make it out to Bosra, a city constructed almost completely with black basalt. Aleppo is Syria’s second-largest city, offering a wide selection of different souks, an ancient citadel and an interesting museum.
