Taiwan enjoyed virtual anonymity until the 17th century, when Chinese and internal politics began to influence the country. In 1624, the Dutch began the first colonial occupation of the island. As part of an agreement to bring the Sino-Japanese War to an end, Taiwan was given to Japan. The first challenge for the Japanese was to quell a revolt and form a republic. They achieved this in no time and began to focus on integrating Taiwan into the Japanese economy.
