Until the 1960s, Pattaya was simply an unnamed bay sited on the stretch of coast between Sriracha and Sattahip. A few fishing families had settled here because the bay was protected from the winds by headlands and a low mountain range. The nearest village a few kilometres to the north was Na-Klua, which means salt fields, where salt was produced for the fishing industry.
