After the fall of Ayuthaya in 1765, the Siamese regrouped under the Chakri dynasty and King Rama I sent a Lampang native, Chao Kawila, to expel the Burmese from the North, restoring the Lanna Kingdom with suzerainty to Bangkok. By the 19th century, the first missionaries arrived and towards the end of the century, the fledgling kingdom found itself constantly in dispute with British teak traders along the Salween border, as Burma became a British protectorate.
