Dubai’s origins date to around 1830 when the area was settled by members of the Bani Yas tribe. Not long afterwards, the settlement began to grow rapidly, becoming an important seaport for regional trading. In 1969, the first oil was exported from Dubai, creating once again a growth spurt in the city’s infrastructure and economy. The British presence was withdrawn in 1971, at which time a number of regional borders were re-drawn, and Dubai joined neighbouring sheikdoms of Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Fujairah, Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain – to form the United Arab Emirates.
